You might have the incorrect stoplight switch wire. In GM trucks manufactured in the 1990s, it can be difficult to access the correct wire. The wire can also be accessed in the main harness located under the steering column. The wire needed is either light blue or white. You will have to use a circuit tester, such as part # 40376 to probe the wires until you locate the one that only shows power when the brake is applied. When are the brakes locking up? If it is occurring immediately upon attaching the trailer, and if your vehicle or trailer uses a 6-way connector, the connector might be wired incorrectly. There are two accepted ways or wiring a 6-way connector, one uses the center pin as the 12 Volt lead, the other uses that pin as the brake output. If the connector on the vehicle is wired one way, and the connector on the truck is wired the other, the trailer brakes will lock immediately when the trailer is plugged in.
