Are you wanting to figure out the proper rise/drop of ball mount needed so your trailer will be level? If this is the case, you can determine the proper height by using a tape measure. Measure from the top of your hitch receiver to the ground. Then with your trailer jacked or propped up so that it is level, measure from the bottom of the coupler to the ground. The difference between these two measurements will tell you the rise or drop of the ball mount that you will need. You will also need to choose a ball mount and ball whose capacity meets or exceeds the weight of the trailer you are planning on towing. Trailer balls have shanks of differing diameters, you will also want to make sure you choose a ball mount whose hole matches the diameter of the shank on your trailer ball. Trailer balls are available in three different sizes 1-7/8 inch, 2 inch, and 2-5/16 inch with the 2 inch being the most common. The coupler on your trailer should have the necessary ball size stamped on it.
