Question:
I have a fifth wheel hitch that is about 15 years old. It articulates and has begin to make clunking noises when I stop and start out. I have not done any maintenance other than an occasional lube of moving parts. Is there a recommendation on inspection.

Expert Reply:
A certain amount of chucking or movement is normal but if it has recently become worse, you will want to give the hitch a thorough examination. Other than following the manufacturers lubrication recommendations, you should inspect the hitch for bent, loose, or broken parts. Check the springs located in the head unit for wear. The manufacturers recommend checking all hardware for tightness after each 1000 miles of use.
