Sway Control Issues on Trailer

Question:

I am currently using this hitch setup pulling a 33 travel trailer. I am still experiencing some sway and have read in forums that this hitch is not designed for trailers over 26 feet. Can I add a dual cam to this hitch to supplement the sway control? I know that the hitch is set up properly for tongue weight so it is functioning as well as it can.

A dual cam system is not available for the Pro-Series weight distribution systems like the # 49579. We have devised two options for you. First, depending on what your tongue weight is, I would recommend a stronger system. If your tongue weight is between 1,000-1,500 pounds I would suggest the Heavy Duty Trunnion System, part # 66131, and the Dual Cam set up, part # 26002. This system would retain your original shank. The second option would work, but would not be the best setup. It would help some, but it would not be as effective as getting a bigger system especially considering the length of your trailer. This second route would require buying 3 new parts. You would get new brackets, part # 6637, the dual cam setup, part # 26002, and finally Trunnion spring bars, part # 6666. If you go this route, note that the replacement spring bars only have a 12,000 pound GTW, and 1,200 pounds tongue weight capacity. These are the only bars that would allow you to use the dual cam system and retain the head you already have. If your trailer weight is more than 12,000 pounds or your tongue weight is more than 1,200 pounds, you can not go this route. Definitely check your tongue weight and gross towing weight on a scale. Get these weights nailed down before you make a decision to make sure you are not exceeding the lowest rated component. Also check all your tire pressures and make sure they are correct and even. If the tongue weight rating is significantly higher than the actual tongue weight of your load, your ride may be a little rougher.
