Using a Fifth Wheel Hitch in a 2005 Nissan Titan with a 4.75 Foot Bed

Question:

My bed measures 57 long. Can I use a 5th wheel hitch with this short bed? If so, any recommendations?

Expert Reply:

That is a pretty short bed, certainly too short for a standard fifth wheel hitch or one equipped with a slider. You might be able to use a Sidewinder, which changes the pivot point between the trailer and the vehicle by relocating it 22 inches to the rear. Check out our Sidewinder FAQ page, and scroll down to the middle of the page. There you will find a formula for determining if using a Sidewinder will gain you enough clearance to prevent the front of the trailer from striking the rear of your truck cab while turning. To find the distance between the hitch jaw to the cab, measure the distance from the center point of the rear axle. If you find you have proper clearance, you would want to choose standard fifth wheel hitch whose capacity is equal to or greater than the as-towed weight of your fifth wheel trailer.
