My 5-Way Flat Trailer Connector Has 6 Wires, Are They All Needed?

I purchased a 5 wire flat to replace a faulty one. The old flat actually has 6 wires. Are they all needed?

Expert Reply:

Two of those wires carry your running light circuits. One wire carries the passenger side, the other carries the drivers side. Rather than splitting the circuit further down the line as is typical, in your case the two legs of the circuit simply join at the connector. Having the connector wired like your old one is perfectly acceptable.
