Question:
We have a 1998 Chevy Tahoe that did not have the hook ups for a brake controller. We took it to the Chevy dealership and had the unit installed a little over a year ago. Two days ago I was driving the vehicle and and I couldnt turn right. I stopped at a service station. He popped the hood and said that the wires from the brake controller had wrapped theirself around the steering rod. Letting me turn right but not left very well. That was unraveled and I took it back to the dealership yesterday. They had popped the piece off around the steering rod and threaded the wires through there. I told the guy that the two wires that had got wrapped around the rod were the two that were feed through there. These wires are up against metal with no rubber grommet. The piece was left off causing hot air to flow into the cabin. When I told him that it needed to be feed through a hole with a grommet he didnt want to listen he said... why drill a hole when there is one right here? We now have a bare wire that is going from under the hood to the interior barke controller. And the lights are not working properly on my truck now. My question is.. when there is not a grommet available are you supposed to drill a small hole and put a grommet in there to feed the wires through therefore protecting the wires from getting injury and causing more problems? I am a female and they tried to talk to me like I was stupid but I would think that wires should not be wedged up against bare metal.

Wow, I am sorry that happened. In my opinion, they should have done as you asked and completed the installation correctly. Anytime wiring passes through the firewall, the opening should have a grommet to prevent the metal from wearing away the wire insulation and possibly causing a short circuit. Wiring should always be kept securely in place, well away from any moving parts (like the steering shaft) and areas that give off a great amount of heat such as the exhaust manifold or exhaust system. I am certainly glad to hear that you were not hurt.
