Is a Pivot Head Lockout Necessary for Highway Travel with a Fifth Wheel Trailer

Question:

on a four way swivel head should the head be locked-out side to side, during highway travel? and why?

asked by: r s

Expert Reply:

It is not necessary to lock the head from side-to-side or lateral pivot when towing on the highway. A Pivot Head Lockout is typically used to prevent some trailer sway. If when passing or being passed by large trucks, your trailer rocks laterally, a lockout can stop that. If your trailer does not have this problem then it is not required to use a lockout. That being said using a lockout, even without sway, will not harm the hitch.
