Recommendation for a 3 Bike Rack for a 2004 Honda Pilot

We do have another option for carrying bikes with your 2004 Honda Pilot. You could install a hitch, like the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, # 75599, which is a custom fit for your 2004 Honda Pilot. This is a Class III hitch which means it can handle more tongue and trailer weight and would work great with a 3 bike rack. I have included a video showing installation on a similar vehicle, as well as the instructions, below. If you decide to go this route, I also recommend Hopkins Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring for the Honda Pilot, # 43105. In case you ever want to pull a trailer or something that requires a connection to your Pilot, this wiring harness is what you will need.

With that hitch installed, you can add the SportRack Escape 3 Bike Hitch Mount Folding Rack with Frame Mount Cradles, # A30403. This rack folds down to give you access to the rear hatch of your vehicle. It can carry 3 bikes and comes with a built-in anti-rattle device to keep it from jostling around while you are driving. I have included two videos and instructions of this rack below.

As you have suspected, the Thule Passage 3 Bike Carrier, part # TH911XT, will not work with your 2004 Honda Pilot. Thule states that the carrier is not recommended because the top straps should not be mounted directly to glass, or plastic trim covering glass. Similarly, Yakima trunk mounted racks will not work for the same reason. Basically, because of the rear hatch construction, there are no rear or trunk mounted racks available for your vehicle.

If you plan to carry womens, childrens, or alternative frame bicycles, I would recommend the Thule Bike Adapter, part # TH982XT. This adapter bar will allow you to carry those types of bikes level on the bike rack.
