Cargo Carrier Capacity and Safety for a 1998 Acura CL

Question:

I have an Acura CL 3.0. I want to transport a powerwasher, 3 buckets with towels and cleaning products. All weighing approx. 70 lbs. max. We are looking at the Class I cargo carrier with the 6 rail around the border. Will it be safe to carry this even going over speed bumps or deep dips in the streets. and lastly, would you recommend buying the light package for the carrier. Thanks for your time

At 70 pounds you will not have to worry about weight. The 20x48 Cargo Carrier # 52017 can hold up to 300 pounds.

The weight of the carrier plus the 70 pounds of cargo added together is what you need to be most concerned about with this setup. Check your owners manual to determine the tongue weight on your vehicle. If the tongue weight is more than 120 pounds (carrier plus cargo) then you will be fine.

In terms of safety it really depends on how well you secure the cargo on the carrier. As long as everything is strapped down tight enough and cannot bounce or slide freely you should not have any problems.

For dips and bumps your biggest concern will be ground clearance. The 20x48 Cargo Carrier # 6500 is good for this application because it has a 3 inch rise.

If you need something to secure your cargo we have the Cargo Carrier Stretch Net # 7330. It has built in hooks, will stretch to fit around various cargo, and is made to work with the Cargo Carriers mentioned.

Lights are always a good idea, especially if you have cargo that obstructs any part of your vehicle lights and you will need them if your state or local laws require the use of lights.
