You will need to hard wire or splice in the brake controller. We have a kit called an ETBC7 that contains all the wiring you will need to take your 4-flat connector to a 4-flat and 7-pole combination connector and wire the brake controller. I have included a video that shows step-by-step how to do this.
Since you have a light duty hitch, I would also suggest making sure your hitch can handle the trailer you intend to tow. You may need to upgrade to a Class III hitch with a 2-inch hitch opening and higher capacity. You will need to know the loaded weight of your trailer to make this determination.
