What Parts Do I Need and What Axle Should I Install Electric Trailer Brakes On a 2009 Nissan Titan

Question:

I would like to in stall elect brakes on my 16X77 utility trailer. Can you tell me what I will Need to do this and What axle should I install them on front or back? Will I need a control switch? I have a Nissan 2009 Titan with the trailer pulling package on it. I also can do some welding if it would be better to put hydraulic brakes? Thanks

Electric brake systems are much easier to install than hydraulic and they require less maintenance and are more in-expensive to maintain.

You will need a brake controller. The most popular brake controller we carry is the Tekonsha Prodigy. This is also my personal choice. You would use part # 90185-3050P for a Prodigy brake controller. This includes the custom fit wiring harness that will allow the brake controller to plug into the port underneath the dash for a plug and play installation.

You will need to find out what axles are currently on the trailer in order to select the right Hub-Drum assembly. You can do this by calling the manufacturer or pulling the hubs off and checking bearing numbers and locating a stamp or plate on the axle including weight capacity. I have included a link to all our Hub-Drums below.

Once you the right Hub-Drum assembly, you will order the brake assembly for that hub and from there it is time for installation and wiring which is pretty straight-forward if you have decent mechanical ability. I have included a link to these below.

I would encourage you to install the brakes on the more forward of the two. When loading a trailer, the nose should be a little heaver than the tail, so the more forward axle will be bearing more weight and will offer better traction and braking ability.
