2006 Toyota Seinna Rear End Squatting and Poor Front End Traction When Towing

Question:

I have a 2006 Toyota Sienna with a Draw-tite class III hitch round tube max frame WC / WD: 3500 / 5000 Currently it has a 9 rise hitch receiver with 2 ball. My problem is the trailer is about 2-3 from being level. I have a lot of squat in the rear suspension which is also causing poor traction on the FWD of the van. I am towing a 12 Aluma snowmobile trailer with 2 550 lb snowmobiles. Can I use an 11 rise hitch receiver or an adapter for my current 9 hitch receiver? Any advice would be greatly appeciated.

You may have a number of issues that need to be addressed. My first reaction is that if your rear end is squatting so much that it is causing issues with the steering and traction of the vehicle, you may have the trailer loaded with too much tongue weight. Try adjusting the load rearward somewhat to eliminate a portion of the tongue weight. Be careful not to adjust the tongue weight too low because dangerous sway will be introduced if the tongue weight is not sufficient. You should have 10 to 15 percent of the trailers gross towing weight for tongue weight.

Next, I would pay some attention to the rear suspension of the vehicle. I would make sure the shocks or struts are in good condition and may consider replacement with heavier duty parts if they are worn out. We have suspension enhancement products (see link) that can also be helpful for the condition you are experiencing.

Finally, I would consider a weight distribution system. A weight distribution system will transfer the trailers tongue weight to the vehicle and trailer axles and will reduce the squat at the rear of the vehicle significantly. This type of system would also help control sway and, if sway is a concern, sway control can be added to the system. I would recommend the Pro Series RB2 Round Bar Weight Distribution Kit with Shank, 600 lbs TW / 10,000 lbs GTW, item # 49568 for your towing setup. This system comes with everything needed for installation except for a properly sized hitch ball with a 1-1/4 inch shank (see link).

I do not believe an 11 inch rise shank is the answer to your problem and would not recommend that for your vehicle. The taller shank may level out the trailer but it will not level out the vehicle like a weight distribution system or the other remedies mentioned. Your best bet is most likely the weight distribution system along with checking the tongue weight and the rear suspension of the vehicle.
