Using a ratchet strap is fairly easy once you learn the basics. Play with the levers and releases before you start trying to strap something in. Learn how the devices work, and how to use it should become clear. If you think of the ratchet as a jaw, you would open it up to 180 degrees. Slide the strap through the slotted spool. Pull most of the slack out, but leave some because the ratchet will need some strap to start an even wrap on the spool. Make sure you keep the straps straight and fingers clear of the gear.To undo a strap, open the jaw up, put just a bit of tension on it as though you were going to tighten it, then pull the release tabs to disengage the jaw from the gear teeth and the spool and the spool should spin freely and unwrap the strap.I have included a link to a page with videos on cargo control systems. Towards the bottom of the page you will find reviews on several ratchet straps.
