Brake Controller on a 2002 Chevy Silverado Does Not Work With Brake Pedal Applied

Question:

The Electric brake control works the trailer brakes, however when I push on the brake pedal in the truck, it doesnt. What am I doing wrong?

Expert Reply:

The manual override switch on your brake controller is operating the brakes, but they are not working when the vehicle brakes are applied, is that correct?

If this is the case, with a trailer connected, use a circuit tester, such as part # 40376, on the red wire exiting the rear of the brake controller. Test this wire as the brake pedal is pressed. If you are NOT getting any signal on this wire, you most likely have a blown fuse in the power distribution box located under the hood on the inside fender well. The fuse is rated at 10 amps, and is referred to in the owners manual as being for the CHMSL circuit.
