Brake Controller will Not be Damaged if the Break-Away Kit is Activated

Question:

I bought an Engager brake controller similar to part 5100 and a TAP 20099 breakaway kit.Can you tell me if the controller will be damaged if the breakaway is activated while the trailer electrical cable is still attached? If this is true, can I put a diode in the blue line coming out of the controller? Do you have any recommendations?
