You can certainly do this. Simply unplug the existing OEM controller, and use the appropriate wiring adapter which will plug into the port that the existing controller was plugged into. You would then wire the controller to the wiring adapter.
My contacts at Tekonsha have told me that doing this can set off an error code on the dash. Depending on the year of your truck, it may be possible to have the truck computer reprogrammed to get rid of the code.
