Expert Reply:

Part # 87442 is a rear-mount hitch. The receiver tube, when the hitch is properly installed, will sit just below the bumper and almost flush with the bumper. I will include a link to the instructions that have a diagram showing where the hitch will sit once installed.

If you are looking for a front mounted hitch for your 2004 Chevy 2500HD, you will need Draw-Tite part # 65028. It sits below the front fascia, some of which will have to be pushed up. I will also include instructions for this part so you can see the diagram of where the hitch sits after installation.
