Is it Safe to Modify and then Use a Weight Distribution Shank

Featured Help Information

Category - WD Shanks

Question:

I currently have this shank for my trailer. I went from a 4X4 truck to a 2X4 which is lower. I had the shank cut to down to fit the truck so it wouldnt hit the ground. Im not quite sure I like what Im seeing with the lower bolt being on such a thin piece of steel now with nothing more under it. My question is: do you think its possible for this thing to crack? I know its tuff steel, but Im at the very bottom now with the bolt, and the bottom is now thin as if being between bolt holes. Thank You

You will need to replace the shank immediately. Steel is a very strong material, but if it is not treated properly it can become very weak. When the solid steel portions of these parts are bored, the temperature is controlled. If steel is heated and cooled improperly, the structure is changed and will become weaker. On top of that, you pointed out that the steel is thin. The thin walls between the holes are fine when the part is left in tact because of the steel thickness on the outside edges, but that has been removed. Not to mention we are coming up on winter, and thin steel when exposed to low temperatures is very brittle. It can most definitely crack or break.

Any of the manufacturers say that if their parts are altered or modified, the warranty is voided and that would definitely apply in this situation. If your Weight Distribution head were to come off, your warranty would not be honored since the head was attached to an altered shank. Same goes for the trailer.

I have included a link to a page with our Weight Distribution shanks. I would recommend part # AMAC1 if it would provide the adequate rise or drop, as it is a cushioned mount and will absorb some of the shock from starting and stopping.
