Recommendation and Sizing for Friction Sway Control Units

Friction is not sized and comes in pretty much standard length. Mounting the units hook-up balls at 5-1/2 inches and 24 inches from the center of the hitch ball is the normal position for these sway controls (always use directions included with the product you purchase).

The use of more than one friction sway control is not usually needed unless a very large trailer is being pulled and there is sway due to wind or passing vehicles. Proper trailer loading is your first line of defense against dangerous instability and sway.

All of the friction sway controls are somewhat effective. These units try to counteract sway after it has begun and do not keep it from starting. Usually cheaper units are manufactured overseas to save on cost. I would recommend the Draw-Tite Friction Sway Control, item # 3400, because it is made in the USA with quality materials. I cannot make a recommendation for manufacturers units that we do not carry.

The best sway control system you could use is the Dual Cam Sway Control, which helps keep sway from starting and does not require removal for backing and making tight turns. I would recommend the Dual Cam Sway Control to use with spring bars have the built in cam at the end of the bars, item # 26002.
