Trailer Hitch Recommendation for Towing a Motorcycle Trailer with a 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis

We have several hitches available for your 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis. I would recommend a Class 3 hitch for towing your motorcycle trailer and because the 2 inch receiver opening will provide many more options for accessories in the future. The Draw-Tite Class 3 Max-E-Loader Trailer Hitch, item # 41116, would be a good selection and will require a spacer Kit, ordered on the product page, for installation. The Curt Class 3 Trailer Hitch, item # 13707, is also a good choice and comes with the spacers needed for your vehicle. You will not need to weld to install these hitches but you will need to drill two 1/2 inch holes in the frame.

The Class 4 Weld-on Ultra Frame Trailer Hitch, item # 41991 is a fabrication part that is designed for heavy duty frame truck and RV applications and, in my opinion, would not be a good choice for your vehicle with the hitches available. Welding on a Class 4 hitch will not provide you with added towing capacity because the Class 3 hitches suggested above can handle the maximum amount of weight that your Crown Victoria can tow. You can only tow as much weight as the highest weight rating of weakest link in your tow package, whether that is your vehicle, hitch, ball mount or ball. The Class 3 hitches are also much easier to install. Also, you can use a ball mount with a rise to accommodate any trailer that the weight capacity of your vehicle and the hitch you select will handle.
