Making Brake Stoplight Switch Connection when Installing Brake Controller on 1998 Chevy Pickup

Question:

I have a 1998 chevy truck with towing package so I have a orange and blue wire from the back of the truck to the firewall. I hooked everything but the brake light wire up. It seems impossible to access the brake switch. It is buried so far up under the dash I cant get my hand up there. I tested a few lugs in the eletrical block just left of the brake pedal and found one that is only hot when the brake pedal is pushed. Can I use this lug to activate the brake controller?

Expert Reply:

It is possible that the lug that you have found will provide the correct connection to the brake stoplight circuit. The switch itself is very difficult to access in that particular model. I do know for a fact that the correct circuit can be found in the main wiring harness found under the steering column. The wire in question can be either white or light blue in color, use a circuit tester to verify that it goes hot only when the brake is pressed.
