Sealing Side Marker Lights to the Trailer Frame

Question:

Received two of the little side lights for my trailer. I noticed that the original light was sealed to the trailer tongue with what looks like double sided electrical tape or some kind of rubber gasket with sticky goop on both sides. Any idea what this is?

Expert Reply:

The double sided gasket type of tape that you are referring to is an OEM item that I have never seen for sale at retail. It is used in many applications on automobiles and trailers.

My recommendation for sealing your lights to the trailer would be to use a silicone based gasket sealer around the light fixture once you have it mounted. Once this sealer has dried you will not have to worry about water getting behind the marker lights and causing problems with the wiring.
