Question:
Do I need a special brake controller to power my electric brakes on my trailer since I have air brakes on my truck?

A brake controller will work on just about any vehicle, regardless of the braking system it uses. The controller is tied into the brake stoplight switch located above the brake pedal, which is what tells the controller that the vehicle brakes are being applied.I would recommend a proportional controller such as the Tekonsha Prodigy, part # 90185. A proportionalcontroller has an internal sensor that can tell how quickly and at what intensity the tow vehicle is braking, and then send the appropriate amount of voltage to the trailer brakes so that the trailer and tow vehicle stop at the same rate. This is an improvement over the older time-delayed controllers, which will always send the same preset voltage to the trailer brakes regardless of how hard you apply the brakes.
