Brake Controller Not Functioning Properly on 1991 Dodge Ram 350

Question:

l have a commander in my 91 dodge ram 350 & when l hook my new trailer up to it the green light but when l press the brakes pedal the same green light stays on but no trailer brakes but if l turn the knob on the right hand side of the commander the trailer brakes come on & the commander lights go from green to red & l double checked all the wiring and it is wired correctly. Or should I reverse the main hot and the brake switch wire? Please let me know as soon as possible.

The 12 volt power lead from your truck should be wired to the black wire coming from the brake controller. The stop light switch wire should be wired to the red wire coming from the brake controller. I have posted a link to our brake controller information page for your to review. It sounds like you may not have your controller set up properly yet. If you have constant power hooked to the stop light switch wire your brakes would be applied when the trailer is connected.

If you have a proportional brake controller the brakes will not be applied until the vehicle is in the process of stopping. The brake controller has a pendulum that activates the brakes and applies power in relation to the speed in which the towing vehicle is slowing. You will need to set up the controller in an area where you can safely stop and go, with the trailer attached, while making adjustments to the controller as outlined in the brake controller instructions.
