Maintaining Trailer Battery Using 12 Volt Accessory Circuit on Trailer Connector

Question:

I have a slide in camper with a deep cell battery, and I want to wire it to charge when the vehicle is running, while also running 12v lights in the camper. Do I just run ignition switched-on circuit, fused 12v to the + post on the RV battery, and then from the + post to the camper plug in?

Expert Reply:

You are correct, the 12 Volt accessory feed from your trailer connector can be used to maintain your RV battery. The interior lighting on your trailer should already be connected to the battery so that they will run on 12 Volt power. It is a good practice to disconnect the trailer when the vehicle is not running to prevent the battery on the tow vehicle from being discharged. When using the 12 Volt accessory circuit on the trailer connector to maintain the trailer battery, make sure to follow the battery manufacturers recommendations regarding battery charging.
