Trying to use the factory supplied harness adapter. Do the colors need to match up or are they different?

The OEM wiring adapter will NOT wire up color for color with the brake controller. The Red harness wire connects with the black wire on the controller, the light green harness wire would attach to the red wire on the controller, the white ground wire on the harness attaches to the white wire on the controller and the blue wire would attach to the blue wire on the controller.
