Install Brake Controller on 1995 Chevrolet Truck With Brake Controller Install Kit, Part # ETBC7

Question:

I will be purchasing a 18 to 20 enclosed cargo trailer shortly and will need to have trailer brakes and aux. power for the trailer. I am planning on purchasing the Brake Controller 7 & 4 Way Installation Kit - 10 Gauge and the Tekonsha P-3 Trailer Brake Controller - Proportional. I currently have a 4 way connection that I wired into a 7 way connector for convience. Will these two purchases accomplish everything I need to do? Also do you have any tips and suggestions for performing this install on my vehical?

The Brake Controller Installation Kit, part # ETBC7 will include everything needed to install the brake controller. On our website, we have a great Brake Controller installation guide, as well as an installation video that you might find helpful. The 7-Way Connector included in the Install Kit would attach to the rear of the vehicle, with the existing 4-way plugging into it. The blue and black wires on the connector would need to be extended using wire included in the kit and ran up to the engine compartment. The wire connected to the blue brake output on the connector would then run through the firewall, connecting to the blue brake output wire on the brake controller. The other wire ran to the front, which connects to the black wire on the 7 way connector, carries the 12V accessory power. It would connect to the positive battery terminal, using the 40 amp circuit breaker supplied with the kit. This leaves three wires remaining on the brake controller. The red wire would attach to the brake stoplight switch located at the top of the brake pedal. There will be three or more wires exiting the switch, use a circuit tester such as part # 40376 to find the wire that goes hot only when the brake pedal is pressed. Once this wire is found, tap the red wire into this circuit. The black brake controller wire would attach to the positive battery terminal, using either the 20 or 30 amp circuit breakers included in the kit. The white wire would ground to the negative battery terminal.
