Surface Ring Tie Down Used With Fiberglass

Question:

I have a fiberglass body that I want to mount this tie down onto. I know I can drill a hole through the fiberglass, but what kind of bolt/nut do I use to attach this surface ring tie down to the fiberglass side so that it doesnt leak and doesnt rip out of the wall?

Expert Reply:

Part # HW03-040 has a rubber mounting ring that will help it seal some. You could also use a silicone caulk to make sure it will not leak.

You would need to use nylon locking nuts to prevent the bolts from threading out.

Please note that fiberglass is not intended to be a structural material, it was designed to be used as a skin. You will need to add some sort of backing plate on both sides of the fiberglass to help spread the force put on the ring when in use. Over time it will probably begin to crack the fiber glass depending on how thick it is. If you could mount this to a wood or steel structure, you would be much better off.
