Installation Issues with Reese SC Weight Distributing Kit # RP66151 and 3 Inch Trailer Frame

Featured Help Information

Installation InstructionsInstructions for RP66151

Question:

Thanks to Bob G. for the excellent advice on calculating hitch weight and choosing the appropriate hitch for my application. I am considering hitch #66151, as you recommended however, I have some questions: First, the installation instructions for the 66000 series of hitches state that hitch #66151 is currently utilizing the frame brackets from the 1,200 lb and the 1,500 lb. hitch kits. Is this correct? If it is correct, I am concerned about my installation. My trailer has a 3-inch frame, which is supported by the 66151 frame brackets. However, the 1,200 lb. and the 1,500 lb. kits appear to support only 4-, 5-, and 6- inch frames. Also, the installation instructions indicate that the recommended placement of the hitch brackets is 29 in. from the center of the hitch ball. In another section the instructions state that the brackets can be located from 18 to 27 in. from the hitch ball. Can you clarify these two issues? Thanks!

The High Performance Reese SC Weight Distribution System, 600 lbs. TW / 10,000 lbs. GTW, item # RP66151, installation kits that we have in stock at this time have the proper mounting brackets for your 3 inch trailer frame. I spoke with my contact at Reese and he said that they could change back to the heavier style bracket if they run out of the smaller ones but that at this time they are shipping the brackets that will accommodate the 3 inch frame. If by some chance you did receive the brackets for the larger system a shim of some type could be used to take up the space between the lower bolt and the trailer frame.

The instructions indicate different positioning of the spring bar mounts because the spring bars load-up differently in different positions. Since chains are not used for the adjustment of the amount of load on the spring bars, on this system, the positioning of the mounting brackets is used. You will set the mounting brackets in the range indicated for your trailers tongue weight when fully loaded and ready to travel.

Once you have the brackets mounted in the position indicated by your tongue weight you will set up your ball mount and weight distribution head so that the spring bars are within 3 to 5 inches of the pad hangers. This may require you to angle the head away from the tow vehicle slightly once the proper ball height is set.
