You want the trailer as close to level as possible to provide the smoothest, safest ride. The Reese High Performance Weight Distribution System, part # RP66153, that you looked at is a little heavier than what your 4,000 pound trailer would really need. It has a Tongue Weight capacity of 800 pounds and your trailer Tongue Weight is closer to 400 pounds, 10 percent of Total Trailer Weight.

I would recommend the Reese SC Weight Distribution System, part # RP66151, as long as the gross tongue weight of your trailer, loaded and ready to travel, will not be very close to, or exceed, 600 lbs. If your tongue weight will be close to or above 600 lbs, I would recommend going with the # 66153 system that you referred to for the added tongue weight capacity. The shank, included with these systems, will allow height adjustment of the weight distribution head.

You would simply mount the head on the shank in the position that would keep the trailer closest to level. Hook everything up on level ground and see where your truck and trailer are. If the trailer and truck are not level, unhook everything and adjust the head position from there.

You should weigh the tongue weight and total weight of your trailer to be sure the weight distribution system you select is rated high enough for for trailers weight, loaded and ready to tow. When weighing your trailer tongue weight keep in mind that anything loaded in the vehicle behind the rear axle is also considered tongue weight.
