Should the Tension On Weight Distribution Spring Bars Be Released When Hitched for Long Periods

Question:

I leave my horse trailer hitched to my truck most of the time. Should I let down the weight distribution bars when not in use, or is it ok to leave them in the tow position all the time? Thank you for your help.

Expert Reply:

I spoke to my contact at the manufacturer and found that you should relieve the tension on your spring bars if you are going to be parked for long periods without towing. If left attached for extended periods the steel in the spring bars will relax and the system will not be as effective. Being hooked for longer periods, a week or more, will not be a problem if the trailer is being used frequently but when the trailer is going to be idle for longer periods, 2 or more weeks, the spring bars should be relaxed so the steel does not have constant stress on it. When parked for longer periods a note on the steering wheel to remind yourself to snap-up the hook-up brackets before taking off would be a good idea, or just lay the lift handle on the drivers seat and the bottom of the steering wheel.
