Actual Towing Capacity of 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan without Tow Package

Question:

I have a 12 Grand Caravan that didnt come with any tow package. I now want to buy a 2012 Jayco pop up tent trailer2005lbs dry/ GVWR 2950lbs..doing research before actually purchasing anything i came up with conflicting #s. My owners manual says i can pull to a max of 3600lbsthis is with 2 occupants and luggage in the van or to a min of 3000lbs5-7 occupants w/luggage. Then on the internet it says a high of 3600lbs and a low of 1600lbs. My question is.. Is the van capable of pulling the trailer i want.? If so, what hitch set-up should i go with?

The towing capacity of your vehicle is based on a sliding scale, dependent on how many passengers/cargo are in the vehicle. For instance, with a driver, one passenger and their luggage, the capacity is 3600 lbs. For 3 - 5 people and their luggage, the towing capacity decreases to 3350 lbs. For 6 - 7 people and their luggage, the capacity is reduced to 3000 lbs. So, you should be able to tow the camper you're speaking of. However, if you'll be running up and down hills, close to the capacity, I'd highly recommend you install a transmission cooler like part # D13503. A transmission cooler will provide inexpensive protection for your transmission. If you click the provided link, you can see the cooler being installed on a 2013 Grand Caravan.

For a hitch, I would recommend the Draw-Tite Class III receiver, part # 87451. You will also need a trailer wiring harness, part # 118534 to provide a 4-pole trailer connector. If the camper uses a 7-way connector and has electric trailer brakes, you would also need a brake controller to actuate them.

Although we have many controllers to choose from, the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885 would be my recommendation due to how easy it is to use. To install the controller, you would need our Brake Controller Install Kit, part # ETBC7.

Finally, you will need a ball mount, # 2753 and the appropriately sized trailer ball. For a 1-7/8 inch ball, use part # 19261 or # 63845 for a 2 inch ball.

I have linked you to some FAQ articles, installation details and install videos that you might find helpful.
