Brake Controller Wire Color Code

Question:

Do you know the wiring designations on this type of controlled. Im pretty sure from everything Ive red, that the heavy red wire is the +12V fused supply, the heavy dark blue wire is the braking voltage being supplied to the trailer brakes, butthere is a heavy-ish blak wire and a thiner white wire. Which of these is the ground for the controller, and which is the braking signal from the vehicle to the controller? Thanks.

Expert Reply:

Brake controllers are typically wired as follows. The blue wire carries the output from the brake controller, the black wire supplies the 12 volt power to the controller, the white wire grounds the unit, and the red wire attaches to the brake stoplight switch to tell the controller when to actuate. Usually, the white and red wires are of thinner gauge.
