Question:
Looking into purchasing camper. Want to consider maximum loadings we can tow with different weight distribution options so we can narrow down which campers to consider. Vehicle is 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.3 litre. Hitch has rating of 4000 lbs maximum weight and 400 lb maximum tongue weight.

The first thing you are going to want to look at is the vehicle owners manual to determine if it can be used with weight distribution and what those capacities are. If the 4,000/400 pounds is that maximum then you will want a weight distribution system that has a tongue weight capacity range that puts that 400 pounds right in the middle.
The limiting factor is not the weight distribution system but rather the capacities of the vehicle or hitch, whichever is lower. That is a static figure that you cannot exceed. In other words using weight distribution will not allow the van to carry more weight than the vehicle is rated for.
A system rated for 200 to 600 pounds tongue weight would be ideal for a 400 pound tongue weight. I recommend the Reese SC system, # RP66151, which includes friction sway control. You will just need to add a properly sized ball to match the trailer coupler. Use # A-90 for a 2 inch diameter or # 19286 for a 2-5/16 inch diameter.
This system also has trunnion style bars which offer better ground clearance over round bar systems. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you to view and a link to our FAQ article on weight distribution and sway control.
