I have included a link to the trunk mount bike racks that will fit a 1999 Toyota Avalon. I recommend the SuperJoe Pro, # Y02629. This is bike rack is light weight, secures with 6 straps, and has anti-sway cradles and would work well for long or short trips.

For any bike rack, on a long trip make sure to check the straps that hold the rack to the vehicle and the straps that hold the bikes to the rack to make sure everything remains tight.

If you will be carrying womens, childrens, or alternative frame bikes, I recommend using the Tube Top adapter bar, # Y02531, for greater ground clearance and to carry the bike more level. I have linked a video that shows how the adapter works.
