In order to carry bikes on your 2009 Toyota highlander, you will need to use a trailer hitch and hitch mount bike rack because a trunk mount cannot be used on your vehicle. Trunk mounts are excluded because the vehicle cannot support the weight at the point where the carriers must be placed.
For a trailer hitch I recommend the popular Draw-Tite hitch # 75726. This is a Class III trailer hitch with a 2 inch receiver that is compatible with many accessories. Having a hitch will also allow you to tow if you ever needed to or carry a cargo carrier.
For a 3 bike rack, I like the Swagman XP, # S64910-2. The single arm and rotating cradles are compatible with many different bike styles. I have included a link to the installation instructions for the hitch and bike rack for you to view.
