Question:
How do I determine which installation location is best/possible for a Transmission Cooler on a 2009 Subaru Forester? I do understand the class distinctions between the coolers and there size and efficiency, I am just having a little trouble understanding which mounting location is possible for this particular vehicle.

The ideal location for a supplemental transmission cooler like # D13502 is directly behind the grille in front of the air conditioning condenser and radiator. I have included a diagram that shows the 3 possible locations.
In the picture, space A, in front of the AC condenser, is best because it gets the most air flow. Space B, between the condenser and radiator, is next but you will see a decrease in efficiency. And space C, behind the radiator, is the least efficient so if you have to install it in this location you will need the largest cooler that will fit in this space.
You will need to look at each of these areas and measure the available space. Then compare those measurements to the dimensions of the coolers on the product pages. Generally, you will go for the largest one that you can fit because transmission fluid cannot be cooled too much.
The cooler you referenced, D13502, measures 11 inches wide, 7-1/4 inches tall, and 7/8 inches deep overall. It will need at least this much space to fit. I have included some links to transmission cooler FAQs for you.
