Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2009 Toyota RAV4

Question:

Other than the swing away models which are beyond our budget, which is the next best rack for our car? Between the various tilt-away racks, which one tilts the furthest, allowing for slightly better trunk access with the Rav4 side-opening rear door? Or, is there a roof bike rack that carries 4 bikes the car comes with a cargo roof rack so it would have to be one that works with that in place.

There are not a lot of bike racks that will allow you to keep the bikes loaded and fold the rack down. What I recommend is the Softride Dura, # SR26247, and use the optional extended length shank, # SR26033, which will allow you to keep the bikes loaded and tilt the rack out. Even with the extension it is unlikely that you will be able to open the rear door all of the way on your 2009 Toyota RAV4.

We do have a 4-bike swinging bike rack that is more economical than the SwingDaddy. Take a look at the Surco swinging bike rack # 51953. This rack will swing off to the side with the bikes loaded and allow you to fully open the rear door on the vehicle. I have included a link to a video review of this rack and the Softride rack for you to view. Both racks require a 2 inch trailer hitch receiver.
