Can I Replace a Factory 1-1/4 Inch Hitch with a 2 Inch Hitch on a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox

Question:

I own a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox that came with the towing package and a 1-1/4inch receiver installed. I would like to unbolt the 1-1/4inch receiver and replace with a 2inch receiver hitch. I do not like using the adapter to convert. There is too much slop and am not comfortable with it. I also am smart enough to know that I cannot tow a trailer that exceeds the vehicles capabilities. Most of all I want to tow a small utility trailer and/or motorcycle trailer. I have no need or desire to tow a large trailer/RV with the Equinox. 1. Can this be done? 2. If it can be done, which receiver hitch to you recommend, keeping quality and safety in mind?

Yes, I verified with my contact at Chevrolet that you can unbolt the factory 1-1/4 inch hitch and install a class III 2 inch hitch, like the Draw-Tite Class III Trailer Hitch, # 75681, on your 2010 Chevrolet Equinox. I have attached the installation instructions as well as an installation video for you to check out.

If you would like to replace the wiring harness on your vehicle as well, then you may also want to pick up the Tow Ready Custom Fit Wiring Harness, # 118264. This is a simple plug-in style harness that uses the factory the factory connection at the rear of your vehicle. I have attached an installation video for this harness as well.

Finally, you may need a new ball mount and hitch ball that will work with your new hitch and trailer. I would recommend picking up the Ball Mount Kit, # 989900. This kit includes two different ball mounts, a 2 inch hitch ball and a 1-7/8 inch hitch ball. This would be a convenient option if your trailers required different size hitch balls.
