Why Cant I Use a Class II Bike Rack in Class I Hitch Sportrack A30901?

Why wont a Class 1 hitch work with this bike rack? Thank you,

This is an excellent question! Although the the receiver size is the same, 1-1/4 x 1-1/4 inch, it is very important you never put a bike rack designed for a Class II hitch into a Class I hitch.

The Class I hitch has a tongue weight rating, (weight of downward force on the hitch), of only 200 lbs. This tongue weight includes the bike rack, bikes, and any weight stored in the cargo area of the vehicle. To attach a Class II bike rack, which has a higher tongue weight rating and can carry more weight, would be a serious safety issue.

Lastly, for safety reasons, a Class II bike rack will not fit into a Class I hitch. The holes will not line up in the receiver, and you will not be able to put a pin into place.
