Parts Needed to Install a Tekonsha P2 Trailer Brake Controller on a 2012 Toyota 4Runner

Question:

My husband and I had a Prodigy P2 mounted in our 2010 Toyota Highlander. My husband passed away in Sept and the Highlander was in an accident resulting in a total loss. I did not get the braking device from the Highlander. Since then, I have purchased a 2012 Toyota 4Runner. I need to get an identical braking system. I am a female and not really familiar on how to install. Can you tell me exactly what I would need to do the job completely along with step by step directions?

I am sorry to hear about your loss. I spoke with my contact at Tekonsha and he said that as long as your 2012 Toyota 4Runner has a factory 7-Way trailer connector you can use the P2, # 90885 with the harness # 3040-P. This harness plugs into a factory harness located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal. You will have to attach the extra ground wire to a bare metal surface under the dash somewhere.

Mounting the controller is not difficult and it will just plug into the factory harness under the dash so I am very confident that you can complete the installation yourself. I am sure your husband would be quite proud. I have included a link to a video that should help. I have also included a link to the installation details on the controller.

If your 4Runner did not come with a factory 7-Way trailer connector, let me know what it does have and I can tell you what you will need to install the brake controller.
