Bad Ground Connection Prevents Roadmaster Bulb and Socket Kit RM-155 From Working Properly

Question:

I installed the RM-155 on our new toad. I find that the lights work although seem dim, the brake lights work seems dim right turn signal works seems dim but when I turn the left turn signal the right turn signal works also, like if the emergency flashers were on. Could a bad ground cause this? I double checked the wiring and it all appears good. Thanks

Expert Reply:

What you are experiencing is definitely a poor ground connection. For proper operation, keeping a continuous ground connection between the toad and the RV is very important.

Make sure that both bulb assemblies are grounded securely to clean bare metal on the vehicle frame. If the vehicle frame is undercoated, you will need to scrape a bit of it off so that the ring terminal on the ground wire gets direct contact with the frame member or chassis. The ground wire is also tied into the ground from the RV. You will also need to ensure that the trailer connector on the RV is properly grounded. I have provided a wiring diagram that will illustrate the proper ground connections.
