Differences Between Softride Dura # SR26247 and Thule Vertex # TH9029

Question:

Comparing the Softride Dura 4 vs the thule vertex 4, is one more stable in the hitch then the other 2004 Honda Odyssey and I plan to use Hidden Hitch class III, 2. Also, I read comments that the Softrides straps to secure the bikes were prone to breaking. Can you comment about any differences in quality with the Thule? What does each weigh? Thank you.

Expert Reply:

Since both the Softride Dura and Thule Vertex use a threaded hitch bolt that draws the shank tightly against the side of the receiver, both bike racks will be very stable in the receiver and should not move around on you. The Dura includes a lock that attaches to the hitch bolt, while with the Vertex the lock # THSTL2 is sold separately.

When overstretched, the straps on the Dura are more prone to breakage. I always tell folks to resist the temptation to tighten the straps as tight as humanly possible. A snug fit is all that is necessary to secure the bike to the rack. As long as you do not go medieval on the straps, they should last a very long time.

The shipping weights (subtract about 5 lbs for packaging) for both racks is very similar, right at 50 lbs.

Thule makes outstanding products that are rigorously engineered and tested. The Softride products are also very good (other than the strap issue).

A huge selling point of the Softride product is that the racks can be tilted away from the vehicle while the bikes remain on the rack. The Thule Vertex would require removing the bikes before tilting the rack. If this feature is a very important factor in making your purchase decision, the Dura might be a better choice for you. If you find that this consideration is not very important, the more modern streamlined design of the Thule Vertex might be more to your liking.

I have linked you to the install instructions for both racks, as well as install and product demonstration videos that you might find helpful.
