The 2 base plates you have referenced for a 2012 Chevy Equinox are different styles. Base plate # 3160-1A is an XL style base plate. XL style base plates are available for cars, SUVs, and trucks. They feature removable drawbar arms.
The frame brackets, when the arms are removed, are nearly invisible. The arms are held in place with a pin and clip. XL style base plates work with all Roadmaster tow bars and they are compatible with quick disconnects.
Base plate # 3160-3A is an MX style. They are designed for vehicles with heavy duty frames like trucks and SUVs. They have removable drawbar arms that attach directly to telescoping tow bar arms. They do not require a crossbar or quick disconnects and they are faster to hook up than other models.
These base plates are compatible with Roadmaster motor home mounted tow bars.
When there are options like this, I usually recommend the XL style base plates because they are compatible with all Roadmaster tow bars. I have included a link to an FAQ article that covers Roadmaster base plates for you.
