We recommend using the Brophy Backing Plate, # BP05, with the Brophy D-Ring Tie Down, # RR05. The diameter of the hole in the backing plate is 3-3/8 inches. The backing plate will provide a more secure installation and give the tie down extra support.
You could install the tie down without using the backing plate, but you would still want to cut a hole that is 3-3/8 inches in diameter to ensure the recessed portion will fit.
The recessed part of the tie down measures 3/4 inch deep. You will not have to cut all the way through the board on your trailer if you do not want to, but just cut the diameter and notch out the 3/4 inch depth. This will also provide additional support for the tie down.
