Trailer Lights Go Out when Brakes are Applied

Question:

when I hook up my trailer all the lights and turn signals work but when I hit the break lights they dont come on to the trailer but they work on the truck I have a 4 wire system can you help?

Expert Reply:

You may have a ground issue. Make sure the ground on the trailer and the Durango are securely attached to a clean surface. If this is not the problem you should check the trailer for proper wiring. If you did not use a wiring harness with a converter box in between the truck and the trailer connection then the break lights will not work because the Durango is on a five wire system and the converter sends the break light signal from the red wire on the vehicle side of the converter to the yellow and green wires that carry the signal for both the turn signals and brake lights on the trailer. I have provided a link below for the T-One custom fit harness for your vehicle which would install in line with your vehicles taillights and includes the needed converter box.
