The only way that a fifth wheel hitch can be used with a 5.5 truck bed would be to use a Sidewinder Replacement Pin Box. The Sidewinder replaces the OEM pin box on your fifth wheel, and changes the pivot point between the vehicle and trailer from the point where the king pin locks into the hitch 22 inches rearward to the point where the pin box attaches to the fifth wheel. In most cases, this provides enough clearance so that 90 degree turns can be made without the fifth wheel loft striking the rear of the truck cab.
A Sidewinder is pin box-specific, you will need to look at the chart on the FAQ page I will link to in order to determine which Sidewinder you will need to match up with your OEM pin box. You will need the manufacturer name and model number of the pin box. This information can be found on a sticker or plate that will be located on the pin box.
A Sidewinder would best be used with a standard, non sliding fifth wheel hitch like part # PS30128. I would not recommend using a Sidewinder with a sliding hitch (unless you already have one). If a Sidewinder is used with a sliding hitch, the hitch should only be used in its forward position. Towing with the slider in the rearward position will put too much trailer weight rearward of the rear truck axle. This will cause a loss of front braking and steering response as the front end of the truck will be too light.
To determine if you will have enough clearance, measure from the rear of the cab back to a point 1-1/2 inches forward of the rear axle center line. Add 22 inches to this measurement. From that number, subtract half the width of your fifth wheel (measured at the front). If the result is 4 inches or more, you will have enough clearance to make 90 degree turns.
I have linked you to the instructions for the install kit that is included with the Pro Series 15K Fifth Wheel Hitch.
