The manual override switch is used to operate the trailer brakes independently of the tow vehicle brakes. This feature is primarily used in the initial set-up of the controller, but the manual switch can be used anytime a gentle brake input is needed, such as correcting minor trailer sway, testing the brakes or when hitching a 5th wheel or gooseneck trailer. Operating the manual switch will usually activate the trailer tail lights, but this can vary according to manufacturer.
If you are speaking of the Hopkins Agility Electric Brake Controller, part # HM47294, the harder the manual override is pressed, the more voltage is sent to the trailer brakes.
I have linked you to our Brake Controller FAQ page that contains additional information about brake controllers.
