Tekonsha Prodigy Proportional Brake Controller will Not Draw Constant Power

Question:

Wont there be a constant power draw from the controller if I just hard-wire it to the battery per the wiring diagram? Wouldnt it be better to wire it to a switched source?

Expert Reply:

The Tekonsha Prodigy Proportional Brake Controller, part # 90185, turns off after 15 minutes of the vehicle being turned off. It will not drain your battery, because there is very little amperage draw when the brakes are not applied and because of the shut down feature. Wiring directly to the vehicle battery is a safety precaution that allows for activation of the trailer brakes even if the electrical system in the vehicle is somehow compromised. When wiring to your battery, be sure to include a circuit breaker. Use a 20 amp breaker if your trailer has 1-2 axles, and use a 30 amp breaker if your trailer has 3-4 axles.
